App designers and developers should not, in other words, leave it 100% up to users to choose, but they shouldn’t restrict choices either. In the case of personalization, it’s up to SaaS companies to take the lead. That’s mainly because we already know what works we’re anticipating desire. There’s no experimentation, and almost nothing (in design, interface, function or form) can go wrong. While the first one implies a DIY approach and a (seemingly) endless array of possibilities, it’s really being done in a controlled environment. If there’s anything to be learned here, it’s that there’s a difference between customization and personalization. It’s true that, now, users expect customization to the nth degree.
